5 Tips to Achieve Great Results When Installing Your Drywall Access Panel
Your projects require the highest level of surface finishes and discreet access to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and AV systems. Achieving a virtually invisible result starts with proper drywall access panel installation. Here are 5 essential tips to help you get it right:
- Ensure proper frame attachment and alignment – With the rear-mount type of access panels, secure the outer frame to the drywall that overlaps the rough framed opening, not to the framework. Ensure the frame is mounted straight and square.
- Provide a Rigid Framing System – The structure surrounding the access panel must be rigid. Use blocking or cross-members to keep framing within 4” of the access panel opening. For suspended drywall grid systems, use rigid steel support hangers to secure the grid to solid structure.
- Use the Right Placement of Screws – The access panel outer frame must be screwed to the drywall every 4” or less with more precise attachment at the corners and through the base of all latch brackets. Proper fastening prevents movement which could lead to cracking filler or reduced function.
- Apply Filler Compound to Height of the Frame – The top edge of the outer frame and the door leaf frame are the finished height of the filler compound. Any filler beyond the protective frame may chip resulting in a less than seamless finish.
- Follow the BAUCO Installation Instructions and Videos – The BAUCO installation instructions included with your panel or in the resource section of our website make installation much easier. Also on our website resource section, are short, easy to follow installation videos.
